YORK Late Music Festival 2006 will open next Friday with a 7.30pm concert by soprano Rosemary Hardy and pianist Sarah Nicolls, winner of the British Contemporary Piano Competition in 2000.
They will perform an entirely British programme of Benjamin Britten, Nicola Le Fanu, Robin Holloway, Oliver Knussen and festival administrator Steve Crowther. This theme is reinforced by Rosemary having known each composer personally.
Virtuoso pianist Ian Pace returns to the festival next Saturday at 7.30pm for a celebration of composer Michael Finnissy's 60th birthday. They have collaborated on the programme and the festival has commissioned a new work from Finnissy, who will give a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm.
In a lunchtime recital next Sunday, baritone Mike Solomon Williams and pianist Tom Gibbs will explore music for voice and piano written since the jazz age by composers with a strong connection with American music. The 1pm concert will feature first performances of new works by Gibbs and festival director David Power. The evening concert by percussion quartet Ensemble Bash has a West African flavour.
