IN the words of one Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes fan who will be seeing the veteran American band for a 23rd time next Saturday in York, he may grant you that he overrates them, but everyone else is guilty of underrating them.

For the uninitiated, Southside Johnny’s combo was the second after Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band to emerge from the New Jersey Shore scene, playing classic rock’n’roll and sizzling rhythm & blues with overtones of the Memphis soul and the Phil Spector template too.

For a break from their usual sound last year, Southside Johnny and long-time Asbury Jukes trombone player Richie “La Bamba” Rosenburg recorded a big-band jazz album of Tom Waits covers with a 20-piece band, arranged and conducted by Rosenberg.

Next Saturday’s 7.30pm concert will be a return to Southside business as usual, however.

Tickets are selling well at £22.50 on 0844 847 2322 or online at grandoperahouseyork.org.uk
