SPIERS & Boden, the multiple BBC Folk Award winners, have made punky English folk their stamping ground, and on Monday they stamp their mark on York.
Utilising only fiddle, foot percussion and squeezeboxes, they create a multitude of textures around an inspired pick of traditional story songs and dance tunes.
They are restless, questing musicians, whether playing as a duo or in their folk big-band incarnation, Bellowhead, or in solo guise, as heard on Jon Boden’s new solo album on the Navigator label, Songs From The Floodplain.
This folk concept album conjures a nightmare vision of an England shocked to its core by an undefined apocalypse.
Spiers & Boden, National Centre for Early Music, York, March 30, 7.30pm
