York Musical Society’s chorus and orchestra perform Bach’s great choral work St Matthew Passion tomorrow evening in York Minster.

Choristers from the Minster will be participating in the 7pm concert, along with University of York graduate Joshua Ellicott in the role of the Evangelist and Robert Rice as Christus.

Two of the other soloists have York connections: mezzo-soprano Catherine Griffith was born in the city and lives locally and one of her children is a chorister at the Minster, while tenor Nicholas Watts was brought up in Long Marston, educated at King James’s School, Knaresborough, and also lives in the area. Further soloists are soprano Rebekah Coffey and bass Jonathan Saunders and the conductor is Philip Moore.

Publicist Fiona Long says: “The Passion is traditionally performed during Lent, and whereas it once enjoyed regular annual airings, these days the huge forces required for its performance – a double choir and orchestra plus extra instruments and voices – mean that the opportunities to hear it live are rarer.

“However, for many music lovers it remains the most powerful and uplifting of all choral works, and we hope that many from around York and beyond will join with us in York Minster in a concert and an act of worship.”

Tickets are available from the York Minster box office, 01904 557208, and York Theatre Royal, tel 01904 623568.
