SOPRANO Dame Emma Kirkby performs in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York, on Wednesday, in a 7.30pm programme of Laments by Carissimi, Monteverdi, Purcell and Lawes.
Accompanied by the University of York Chamber Choir, David Miller, chitarrone, and Peter Seymour, harpsichord and organ, Dame Emma will sing Carissimi’s Historia di Jephte and cantata Il Lamento in Morte di Maria Stuarda, his depiction of the emotions of Mary, Queen of Scots on the eve of her execution.
Monteverdi’s ground-breaking Lamento della Ninfa will be complemented by two English pieces: William Lawes’s lament on the death of John Tomkins and Plaint from Fairy Queen by Purcell.
