PETER Broderick is a name yet to register in many homes, but his debut album, Home, arrived just in time to make number 19 in The Sunday Times’ pick of the year’s best and number 26 in Mojo magazine’s selection for 2008.
Home will be promoted by the classically trained multi-instrumentalist from Oregon on his first British tour next month, when he plays The Duchess in York on February 9 in his only Yorkshire appearance.
Meditative and melancholic, Broderick’s artful, ambient folk songs involve his sampling and layering his vocals until it resembles a choir, while looping guitar, piano and violin to create a one-man orchestra.
“Fans of Bon Iver and Gravenhurst, listen up, Broderick’s celestial virtuosity and songwriting has already earned reams of quality press – and with good reason,” says The Duchess’s manager, Tim Hornsby. “It’s stunningly beautiful music. No other words for it.”
Tickets to see the 21-year-old Broderick cost £8 in advance on 08700 600100 or £10 on the door from 7.30pm.
