The first British Music Society of York concert of 2009 next Friday is an opportunity to hear original compositions for the unusual combination of harp and oboe at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York.

Young musicians Victoria Davies and James Turnbull both read music at Christ Church, Oxford, and are supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

Victoria won the London Harp Competition in 1999 and 2001; James was principal oboe in the National Youth Orchestra, where he played under Sir Simon Rattle, and now he is studying with oboist Nicholas Daniel.

Next Friday’s 8pm programme comprises J S Bach’s Sonata in G minor, Britten’s suite for harp, Metamorphoses, Hoddinott’s Bagatelles for harp and oboe, and works by M Berkeley and Piazzolla.

Tickets: £12, students £5, on 01347 878032, online at bms-york.org.uk or on the door.
