If you think of Bryan Adams the rock star you probably think of stadium gigs as you reach for your air guitar, but it was Bryan Adams the songwriter who took to the stage at the Grand Opera House armed with just an acoustic guitar.

Last night’s audience were genuinely exhilarated as they got the chance to get up close and personal with an international star whose formula is not necessarily sophistication. He tends to lean towards the anthem.

But very well thought-out lyrics regarding relationships, romance and love, endear Adams the man and his emotional songs to his audience.

An excellent example of his craft being Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? – a truly touching and thought-provoking song.

And what a nice guy. Interacting effortlessly with his fans, the evening became a very intimate experience.

The most adored busker York has ever known turned a good evening into a spectacular night with his charm. At one point he actually went off his set list to perform a song requested from the audience – something you will rarely, if ever, see.

His ready wit shone through as he subtlety mimicked some of the stars who have covered his work, including Joe Cocker and Tina Turner.

If you’ve never really got into Bryan Adams, you should. Because if you have just the smallest romantic bone in your body when you listen to his songs, it will be like you’ve missed him all your life.
