PRIMA Vox and Oslo Voices united for A Scandinavian Christmas at the De Grey Rooms, York, last Friday.

"With Christmas almost upon us, the Prima Vox choir opened the Yuletide choral celebrations with another international collaboration, extending their cultural hand of welcome to the award-winning Oslo Voices from Norway," says musical director Ewa Salecka.

"These two modern choirs provided a unique blend of Christmas music in the stately chic surroundings of the De Grey Rooms. With table seating arranged in the elegant Dickensian ballroom, refreshments to hand and carols with international appeal, it was a unique choral event and another opportunity to showcase our city at its very best to international performers."

The 7.30pm programme reflected the diversity of the performers. Both Ewa and her Norwegian counterpart, director Ingrid Hanken, are committed to the highest standard of contemporary choral performance and each choir has a wide remit that embraces sacred, secular and folk music.

Oslo Voices included carols from Scandinavia and beyond. Traditional "Christmas tunes were presented in modern arrangements, and both choirs featured the music of popular contemporary composers, some familiar surprises, and even a touch of spiritual song with a seasonal twist," says Ewa.
