YOUNG musicians from across the city show off their talents at the York Schools' Music Festival at the Grand Opera House on Sunday from 2pm.

Organised by the City of York Council's arts education team, the festival features diverse vocal and instrumental music, including a soul band, a steel pan group and two giant orchestras.

Lord Deramore's, Dringhouses, Badger Hill and Tang Hall primary schools are combining musical forces to form a 45-piece orchestra; Carr Junior and Acomb, Rufforth, Westfield and Poppleton Road primary schools are uniting for another huge ensemble; and a choir of 70 singers is representing Knavesmire and Dringhouses primary schools.

Tim Brooks, City of York Council's music consultant, says: "These groups demonstrate a growing interest in schools to work together in arts activities. This is a great development and I'm very pleased to see the results of this collaboration at the festival.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for schools to showcase their musical strengths and for young people to have the experience of playing on a large stage to an audience of nearly 1,000 people. We want to show the range, diversity and quality of music going on in York schools.

There's a very positive and encouraging atmosphere among the performers and it's an event that many pupils will remember for a very long time."

Tickets cost £3.50, concessions £2, on 0870 606 3595.
