Ward Thomas

The Barbican Centre, York, May 2

WARD THOMAS are twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy currently at the forefront British country music, and they're in York promoting their chart-topping 2016 album Cartwheels and recent covers EP A Shorter Story.

Their set starts with an a cappella introduction of Material, immediately showcasing the twins' gorgeous harmonies that are a constant for the evening.

Plentiful Radio 2 airplay has resulted in an enthusiastic Radio 2 audience, who obediently respond to requests to singalong and for “hands in the air”. You can’t help but be cheered by the youthful exuberance and their lively songs mixing country and pop/rock influences.

Resolutely upbeat, they skip through many of the songs from Cartwheels, including Boomerang, Almost Easy and a lively rendition of Carry You Home.

New song Breathless and the acoustic rendition of Proof are highlights of the set, which also includes a cover of Years And Years’ chart-topping hit Shine.

Wildwood Kin were a fabulous support, great songs with some “pleasantly awkward” chat notably including the brilliant explanation “we tune because we care”. Highlights included The Author and the Crosby, Stills and Nash song Helplessly Hoping.

Ward Thomas play Church Leeds on Thursday, May 4 and Pocklington on July 15.
