YORK musicians Vesper Walk's first full theatrical show, Really Really Want, will be performed in York Theatre Royal's main house on November 10.

Described as songs with a play, it tells the Girl Power tale of a group of middle-aged women who find themselves increasingly imprisoned by work, relationships, their own inner voices and drawers full of control underwear. Together they come to the only logical solution: form a girl band.

"You can be anything you want to be, or so we’re all told, but does that kind of freedom really exist at their age, in our age?" ask Vesper Walk sisters Lisa-Marie Baker and Catherine Cowan.

Lisa-Marie, who founded Vesper Walk with piano partner and fellow vocalist Catherine, says: "The band started treading the theatrical boards two years ago when we took The Fallen Angel Show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Since then, we've been working on weaving a multitude of art forms together.

York Press:

Really Really Want: "Funny, poignant and filled with quirky songs"

"Really Really Want is funny, poignant and filled with original, quirky songs that Vesper Walk are known for as it examines the joys and pains of your average mid-life crisis."

In the show, Fran always wanted to be a Spice Girl. Now she is 44 and still does as she drifts through a life of middle-aged mundanity. Whereupon she meets Starling, a penniless musician struggling to stay on the right side of the law, and while Starling is desperate to be free of her probation officer, Fran longs to liberate her dreams.

Vesper Walk hope to take this "highly entertaining and thought-provoking show", full hope, freedom and friendship, to Edinburgh next summer. Meanwhile, the York premiere will be performed by professional musicians and actors Lisa-Marie and Catherine, Lucy Charnock, Amie Robertson, Joyce Griffiths and Vesper Walk newcomers Katie Western and Joanna Huntington.

Tickets for the 7.30pm performance cost £10 on 01904 623568, at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or in person at the Theatre Royal box office.
