BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Jackie Oates will play Selby Town Hall with her band, including Nizlopi double bassist John Parker, in support of her sixth studio album, last month’s The Spyglass And The Herringbone.

“Jackie is one of the more trad of the bright young things of folk – Bella Hardy, Lucy Ward, Josienne Clarke – but it’s lushly beautiful and heart-warming stuff,” says Chris Jones, Selby Town Council’s arts officer. “I challenge any listener not to have a beaming smile on their face as they play the new record.

“Jackie has the kind of rich, warm and wistful voice that it’s almost impossible not to be utterly entranced by, and the album is an extraordinary work of beauty. I’m thrilled that she’ll be performing tracks from it here in Selby, complete with her full band, on the final date of her UK tour.”

Viola player and singer Jackie began her career as a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Awards in 2003 and later won the Radio 2 event’s Horizon Award. She was a founding member of the Mercury Prize-nominated Rachel Unthank And The Winterset before pursuing a solo career that also has seen her record with her brother, fellow folk musician Jim Moray.

Doors open at 7.30pm for the 8pm start next Friday. Tickets cost £14 in advance on 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk or £16 on the night.
