SELBY Town Hall will welcome Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham, founding members of the cult 1970s blues quartet Nine Below Zero, on March 28 as the pair embark on their first acoustic duo tour.

Formed in 1977, Nine Below Zero recorded three albums for A&M, appeared on The South Bank Show, Old Grey Whistle Test and the first ever episode of The Young Ones and supported The Who and The Kinks on tour.

They were leading lights in the pub rock scene of the mid-Seventies, alongside Dr Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe and Ian Dury, and now, 38 years after the band began, singer-songwriter Greaves and harmonica player Feltham are touring with an old-style blues show.

The duo will play unplugged versions of Nine Below Zero favourites alongside covers by blues legends Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo and Leadbelly, as well as discussing the artists who inspired so many of the great British blues bands of the 1960s, who in turn went on to inspire them.

A love of the blues began at an early age for both performers. Two of Greaves’s uncles had big collections of blues albums that led him to first pick up a guitar, while Feltham had an uncle in the merchant navy who would bring him back harmonicas from travels overseas.

The pair first met during the punk era, when Graves decided to form a blues band and harmonica player Feltham was recommended to him. By coincidence, it turned out they were not only living on the same estate in South London, but also only 14 houses apart.

“Nine Below Zero are a fantastic band of great pedigree who sold out the Town Hall in double quick time when they performed here a few years ago” says Chris Jones, Selby Town Council’s arts officer. “The fantastic acoustics and really intimate feel make this a great venue for Dennis and Mark to try out their stripped-back duo show. This should be a really special night of wonderful music from two master performers.”

Tickets for the 9pm show cost £13 in advance on 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk or £15 on the door from 7.30pm.
