THE York chamber ensemble, the Academy of St Olave’s, will give its first concert of the New Year on January 24 at St Olave’s Church, Marygate, York.
In an 8pm programme of works from three eras of the classical genre, the orchestra will lead off with Schumann’s buoyant and charming Overture, Scherzo and Finale, dating from 1841, when it was conceived originally as his second symphony.
Then will follow Haydn’s exuberant and evergreen Symphony No. 104 (London), which crowned the second of the composer’s two triumphant visits to the capital in the 1790s, before St Olave’s church organist Keith Wright will join the Academy for Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings from1938.
The orchestra will be directed by guest conductor Alasdair Jamieson, who says: "The Academy is delighted to welcome Keith Wright as soloist. The church organ is a recently restored, beautifully toned Walker organ; the Academy orchestra having originally been established to fund a previous restoration of the same instrument.”
Tickets for the Academy's Winter Concert cost £12, concessions £11, students/children £5, in advance from Visit York, in Museum Street, or on 01904 550099 or on the door. All profits will be donated to the DEC Ebola Crisis appeal.
