RM Hubbert cherry-picks from his three Chemikal Underground albums at The Duchess in York tonight.

His website introduces him as a "guitarist from Glasgow in Scotland, who has made a new record called Breaks & Bone, also known asThe Last of the Ampersand Trilogy". "It's a bit cheerier than my previous albums, Thirteen Lost & Found and First & Last," he says.

Breaks & Bone was released last September with its combination of five instrumental guitar pieces and five vocal songs that explore letting go, moving on and acceptance. "Only one man and his acoustic guitar, almost nothing else is included, aside from the occasional buzz of a string or creak of the guitar body," wrote The Press reviewer Julian Cole. "In some senses, Breaks & Bone is a fertile exploration of depression, from which RM Hubbert finds resolution of sorts through flamenco music.

"Granted, that doesn't sound like much fun, and this is a sombre affair, yet one lifted by the melodic strength of these intimate songs. And the playing is fantastic, with rhythmic flurries of notes building into memorable songs."

Hubbert's 2009 debut album of nine solo instrumental guitar pieces, First & Last, was written to help Hubbert deal with the death of his parents and the return of chronic depression. "It's not as depressing as that last sentence may suggest," he says.

2012's Thirteen Lost & Found was conceived as a way for Hubbert to reconnect with old friends after losing touch over ten years. Consequently, it featured collaborations with Scottish musicians Aidan Moffat, of Arab Strap, Emma Pollock, from The Delgados, Aladair Roberts, Luke Sutherland, of Long Fin Killie and Mogwai, and Hanna Tuulikki, from Nalle and Two Wings. The album was produced by Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, a long-time collaborator and friend and won the Scottish Album of the Year Award in June 2013.
