YOU know you’ve been to a good concert when 48 hours later you still can’t get the songs out of your head.

I’d not heard The Kaiser Chiefs’ I Predict A Riot for years, but now it’s rattling round my brain with no signs of escape following their brilliant concert at York Racecourse on Friday.

The Leeds indie outfit of Ricky Wilson, Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines and Vijay Mistry followed the likes of Blondie and Madness in entertaining the lucky and not so lucky racegoers as part of the annual musical showcase weekend.

After the last of the horses had left the track, Knavesmire erupted to the roar of more than 27,000 fans as the Yorkshire rockers took to the stage.

Lead singer Wilson, in fairly scruffy denim jacket, declared: “I’ve never seen so many well-turned out people at one of our concerts before... so many suits and ties!”

The pace from the off was relentess; “No time to stop, keep it up” shouted Wilson as he powered from one song to another, hardly stopping for breath – and the crowd lapped it up.

Wilson was in his element back in God’s Own Country, bouncing around on stage Jagger-eqsue and urging the mob to chant “Yorkshire, Yorkshire” with him.

Mix together Green Day, Kasabian and The Clash and you have The Kaisers, a post-punk Brit band who are home belting out their anthems to a huge “stadium” crowd.

Hit after hit followed – Oh My God, Angry Mob, Na Na Na Na Naa, Everyday I Love You Less And Less, Never Miss A Beat and Modern Way.

Their only Number One, Ruby, Ruby Ruby, had Knavesmire screaming out her name, while the sound of 27,000 racegoers chanting I Predict A Riot was perhaps the defining moment of the racecourse’s showcase nights so far.

Whoever the racecourse has lined up for next year’s Friday night showcase, they’ll have to be to something special to top the Kaisers.
