AS the evening sun began to set over York, hundreds of film lovers descended on Museum Gardens for the first Orillo Outdoor Cinema.

Hosted by York film production company Orillo Productions, made up of five York St John University graduates, the sold-out evening was a brilliant showcase of York creativity and an American indie classic, all against the beautiful backdrop of St Mary’s Abbey.

Some came with picnic hampers, others brought deckchairs and sofas, while a few lounged on the grass and soaked up the rare Yorkshire sun.

For those who hadn’t come armed with homemade picnics, the guys at Orillo had teamed up with York businesses Xing Smoothies and EAT-ME cupcakes to provide tasty treats for any hungry filmgoer. Strawberry and blueberry popcorn was being sold by glamorous popcorn girls, adding a quirky touch to an impressive event.

Great short films were screened, including a touching music video by York St John film and television graduate Andy Little, with applause and cheers coming from the crowd after every film.

As darkness descended over the abbey, the film chosen by film goers in an online Orillo poll, (500) Days Of Summer, started to weave its charms. As laughter echoed around the gardens, it was clear the marriage of offbeat romantic comedy and location couldn’t have been more perfect.

As well as showcasing great York talent, the Orillo team managed to create an unforgettable and wonderful evening. Let’s hope they host another one next year.
