RESTAURANT staff from Yo! Sushi, on Church Street, will be offering a taste of their sushi dishes in the foyer at City Screen, York, before Tuesday’s 6.15pm screening of Jiro Dreams Of Sushi (U).

Directed by David Gelb, this American documentary profiles the Michelin three-starred Japanese master chef Jiro Ono and his family, chronicling their almost fanatical quest to perfect the art of sushi at Ono’s Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant.

Beyond the kitchen, Gelb’s film also focuses on the old man’s two sons: Yoshikazu, destined one day to take over his father’s flagship restaurant, and Takashi, who already runs his own successful restaurant.

City Screen’s Discover Tuesdays slot presents a quietly moving homage to a gastronomic dynasty that reveals a secretive and perfectionist world. Please note, the screening will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

• CITY Screen, York is adding a third screening of Michael Haneke’s Amour (12A) on Wednesday at 2.30pm to complement shows on Sunday at 2pm and Monday at 6.15pm.

Austrian auteur Haneke, the director of Hidden and The White Ribbon, orchestrates a heartbreaking film about an elderly French couple whose marriage is tested by the onset of illness.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Amour made its way on to pretty much every critic’s list of the best films of last year, and this is the first chance in York to see why.
