YORKSHIRE Wolds artist Rob Moore explores feelings of apprehension and awe in relation to landscape in his new body of work at Duckett and Jeffreys Gallery in Malton.

His Landmarks show is largely devoid of colour, the series of large-scale experimental drawings being executed with black Indian ink.

Although not bleak, the work often suggests a threat or an ominous presence situated in the environments from which it is sourced, such as a short heavy storm, an impenetrable wood or some other small drama experienced on the many walks undertaken by Rob.

Gallery co-owner Stef Mitchell says: “Landmarks is a lyrical show about an artist reflecting back on 40 years of studio practice and, in doing so, stripping back to a practice founded on drawing and mark making.

“Pivotal to the exhibition are two key pieces now in private collections, which Rob considers touchstones for the new 2011 works, offering a lineage demonstrating his passion for space, mark, memory, suggestion, interpretation and innovation.”

Duckett and Jeffreys has produced an exhibition publication detailing Rob’s working methods and thought processes, including an essay by Professor Anne Grebby, his first tutor at art school in Sheffield.

She describes his work as “brave”, prompting Rob to reflect: “I imagine she means that to work on this scale with the unforgiving medium of Indian ink is somewhat risky. Well, maybe it is. I certainly like to keep my ideas and working processes alive and moving, an approach which is also evident in the restless nature of the images and marks.

“Like a walk sometimes can be, the work is meandering and the destination not yet in view. Travelling is interesting.”

While on the subject of travelling, Rob has been on the move, relocating his studio from the Wolds to Humber Street, in Hull.

Complementing Landmarks will be an exhibition by York artist Jamie Barbor and American painter Jana Bailey in the DJ Selections room.

Landmarks runs until May 14 with an official launch evening tomorrow from 6pm to 8pm, when Rob will be in attendance. Duckett and Jeffreys Gallery, in Old Maltongate, Malton, is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and at all other times by appointment on 01377 236008.
