PETE McKee’s retrospective show, A Month Of Sundays, displays his idiosyncratic style, use of humour and pop culture themes in 30 original images on show in the York College gallery from Monday to December 2.

As the title indicates, the exhibition reminisces on the long Sundays of the Sheffield artist’s youth: days that could drag, without the football or the shops, but if you were fortunate enough, you might get a trip to the seaside or a packet of crisps down the working men’s club.

Helen Ventress, head of art, design and craft at York College, says: “We impart to our students the importance of a narrative within an image, a story the audience can engage with. McKee’s work demonstrates this perfectly. Using a seemingly simplistic style, McKee’s work can convey great tenderness, humour or joy, sometimes all at once.

“The style of the images is sure to appeal to our students, and we intend to run a number of workshops on the McKee style, exploring a contemporary, pop-art approach to creating work. Our English A-level students too will have the opportunity to work on a creative-writing competition brief inspired by the exhibition title.”

McKee himself is planning to run a workshop with students, where he will discuss his inspirations and give a practical demonstration of how his images take shape.
