Acomb artist and playwright Tom Wilson is holding an exhibition at the Quaker Rooms, Friargate, York, in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Appeal.

“I’ve been painting on and off for a few years now and had a couple of exhibitions when I was living in London,” says Tom. “Recently I’d started up again, though since moving to York I’ve been preoccupied with drama and script writing.

“But when the Haiti Earthquake disaster struck, I spoke to the chaps at the Quaker Rooms and asked if they would let me exhibit some of my work with a view to donating all the proceeds to the Haiti appeal and they agreed to it.”

Tom’s pieces will be on show for at least a month from this week.

“I’ve priced them all at £40, and as they sell I’ll be replacing them with more work,” he says. “If any other establishments in York want to host my work for charity – which I think would be to the benefit of all concerned – they can get in touch on gingerorourke@hotmail.com.”

Meanwhile, Tom’s script for The Secret Life Of John Cooper Clarke, the punk play he staged in York last November in Screen Two at Reel Cinemas, is being read by Kathy Burke’s agent.

“I’ve asked Kathy if she’d like to direct the play, so fingers crossed there,” says Tom.

“I’ve also written a pilot for a TV series based on a football referee that wears a mask to protect his anonymity, and I’m now writing a piece about John Lennon in a world where he doesn’t become one of the Beatles.”

As if he were not sufficiently busy already, he is setting up a beginners’ drama class in Acomb this month.

“It’ll run from June 23 on Wednesday evenings for over-16s only; why not come along, have fun, learn?” says Tom, who can be contacted on the above email address for more details.
