York Artisans complete a busy and productive first year with their Autumn Art Collection 2009 show at Space 109, the community arts centre in Walmgate, York.

“We’ll be firing on all cylinders in this creative extravaganza,” promises the Artisans’ project manager, Chalky the Yorkie.

Running from this evening’s preview until Sunday, the show combines new pieces by Artisans artists with artwork by Cheryl Colley’s York Arts Alive, sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Community Arts.

Taking part will be York Artisans’ luminaries Robert Ford, alias Jacob; Andy Q; Chalky the Yorkie, The Neo-Edwardian; and Fiona O’Connor with her Dragon Crafts, to name but a few.

“This show and the York Artisans both have the viewpoint of putting forward an alternative vision of art, giving local artists a chance to express themselves in an illustrative investigation, and at the same time linking up with Space 109, managed by Jo Pullar, who has been working very hard to allow people countenance in finding new freedoms and building bridges within the local community,” says Chalky.

“Art can be an open door for people to enjoy at face value or at a deep and intense level, depending on the eye of the viewer.”

• Opening hours are 7pm to 10.30pm tonight,10am to 4pm, tomorrow, and 11am to 4pm on Sunday. Entry is free; everyone welcome.
