MONDAY will see the start of Create09 at York St John University in a new celebration of the creative talents of students in the faculty of arts.

Create09 is the culmination of the faculty’s graduate shows, including the best examples of student art, creative industries, dance, design, film and television, media, music and theatre performance.

“Create09 is a multi-layered event in which the university can demonstrate its continued commitment to developing and supporting the next wave of new artists and cultural commentators,” says faculty dean Professor Steve Purcell.

Notable examples include the work of Charlotte Jagger, a third-year design student. Charlotte worked with the Denby pottery company to produce a new tea bowl and saucer, informed and inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony.

“I’ve always enjoyed design and at York St John I have had the opportunity to work on live projects with high-profile companies and organisations,” she says.

“For my latest project I produced a range of tableware products for Denby, themed on the Japanese tea ceremony. Not only did I get to work with a company like Denby and the Japanese Embassy, but I was also awarded a scholarship to allow me to go to Japan to complete my project.”

Music concerts and theatre productions will take place during week to demonstrate the wealth of talent in the student community. One such music student is Jennie Coates, who will perform her final third-year recital as part of Create09 on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm in the Chapel at the Lord Mayor’s Walk campus.

“Create09 gives students the chance to perform to a wide audience, marking a transition between performing for other students and our tutors, and performing for the wider public,” says Jennie.

Create09 will be open for public viewing from Monday to May 29. The exhibitions and performances will be held at Lord Mayor’s Walk campus, Space 109 in Walmgate and 41 Monkgate. Entry is free but some events will need to be booked.
