ZOE Catherine Kendall will be exhibiting a new collection of paintings at Fossgate Social café bar, in the heart of York’s growing independent scene in Fossgate YO1, throughout October.

This interdisciplinary artist's latest artworks were first exhibited at the new indie shop Owl & Monkey, on Heslington Road, in June. "The title of my latest exhibition, Playing For Life, comes from the unusual canvas I've used for my paintings: playing cards illustrated with self-portraits from great masters," says Zoe.

"These have been transformed, creating collages that reveal an alternative self-portrait, both of the artist, ‘the other’, and of society, and I'll be exhibiting larger paintings and prints alongside these which provide context for my new work."

Looking forward to opening the exhibition on October 6, when the public will be welcome from 7pm, Zoe says: "Fossgate Social is a cosy and relaxed indie café bar owned by brother and sister duo Mike and Sarah Lakin, who both herald from creative careers. Fossgate Social strives to do things a bit differently, and part of this plan is to feature diverse artists’ work on their walls each month, providing the perfect venue to showcase local talent. Since Fossgate Social opened in 2014, it’s been a hit with locals and students alike."

Zoe not only paints but makes jewellery too, having graduated from Central Saint Martins with a degree in jewellery design in 2007. "Since then, my jewellery has been represented in Kabiri, Selfridges and Johnny Rocket, featured on vogue.com and received international press coverage," she says.

"I've also exhibited as a visual and performance artist in London galleries. Originally from London, I'm now based in York, where I'm returning to my practice after dealing with health issues. I'm a keen advocate of mental health awareness and of the life-enriching qualities of the arts."
