SHIRLEY Vauvelle and Corinne Young are exhibiting new original botanical-themed work for the summer in the visitor centre at the Yorkshire Arboretum, near Castle Howard.

Friends Shirley and Corinne show together regularly, although they work in very different media; Shirley, from near Filey, being a mixed-media artist and ceramicist; Corinne, from East Yorkshire, specialising in 3D textile pieces. Both are inspired by gardens, landscapes and the coast near where they live and work; both exhibit nationally and internationally.

Corinne’s 3D textile pieces are hand and machine-embroidered on to fabric or her own handmade linen paper and her floral and insect studies have a historic feel, inspired by her passion for antiques. In addition to framed pieces, her works include embroidered wall features, stump work caskets and pressed plant artworks for a London restaurant.

"I am delighted to be returning to the Yorkshire Arboretum after a very successful show last year," says Corinne. "“The landscape is truly inspiring and one of the most magnificent areas in Yorkshire.”

Shirley creates not only ceramic and driftwood pieces but also mixed-media canvases that are built up with layers of colour, texture, marks and patterns until the right feel and balance is achieved.

Her botanical earthenware plaques are slab built and impressed with the wide range of plants she grows in her garden on the East Coast near Filey. The surface is coloured with slips, oxides and under glazes and these are fired two or three times in an electric kiln.

In 2015, Shirley was commissioned to produce an installation for the Hilton Hotel in Venice and her work and studio have been featured on Channel 4’s Homes By The Sea.

Shirley and Corinne's Flora exhibition runs at the Yorkshire Arboretum until August 31, 10am to 4pm. For more information, phone 01653 648598 or go to yorkshirearboretum.org
