ONE of York’s MPs has called on the Government to publish the top salaries paid by rail companies.
Hugh Bayley, who represents York Central, asked Transport Secretary Justine Greening to look into the matter during an exchange in the House of Commons, saying pay and bonuses for executive directors of train operators which are privately-owned but subsidised with public money should be revealed.
Mr Bayley said only one of the six companies which receive these subsidies publish such information and wants this to be done across the board on an “anonymous basis”, with the Transport Secretary having said she will look into it.
“When rail fares are rising faster than inflation, taxpayers should know how much of their money goes on executive pay and perks in companies which are subsidised by the taxpayer,” said Mr Bayley.
