York Central MP Hugh Bayley visited two city centre Tesco stores to highlight the need for customers to treat shopworkers with respect.

The MP was at the Piccadilly and Low Ousegate branches of the supermarket giant to support the shopworkers’ union Usdaw’s Respect for Shopworkers Week.

He said: “No worker should suffer any form of abuse, violence or assault whilst they are at work. It’s often said that the customer is always right, but it’s not always true.

“Shopworkers often come into contact with people who are rude, offensive, and sometimes violent.

“This is unacceptable and when it happens it is important the shopworkers receive support from their employers and trade unions.”

He praised Tesco for supporting the campaign and said he was working with other Labour MPs and the union to create laws to protect shopworkers.
