A VISITOR hub is being set up in Malton for visitors to enjoy the Tour de Yorkshire on Saturday.

The second leg of the inaugural event begins on the Yorkshire coast on Friday, and heads to Norton on Saturday.

People are also being encouraged to visit Malton, Yorkshire’s Food Capital, to enjoy the spectacle on a big screen.

The visitor hub will be set up with a big screen in the Market Place, from 10am, adjacent to a hospitality area, which will include seating, tables and hot food from Hepy’s Hog Roast.

The race will be broadcast live on the satellite sports channel Eurosport. It begins in Selby at 11am and will make its way into Norton between 1.48pm and 2.03pm, after crossing the Yorkshire Wolds.

Mike Skehan, clerk of Malton Town Council, said: “While crowds are expected in Norton to view the race, Malton offers a special place to view this exciting event. The atmosphere promises to be fantastic.”

Richard Horsewood, of the town’s Chamber of Trade, said: “The annual Totally Locally FiverFest will also be in full swing, so people can visit local shops and see what offers they have for a fiver.”

Visitors can make a day of it by visiting Malton’s attractions, including Malton Museum in Yorkersgate, open from 10am to 4pm, which is hosting an exhibition, Wheels Within Wheels, a brief snapshot of cycling in Malton and Norton, and Scrooge’s Counting House in Chancery Lane, which is open from 10am to 2pm.

Limited free parking is available in the town centre, while parking in Wentworth Street and Water Lane car parks will cost £1.50 all day.

The event is being promoted by Malton Town Council with support from the Malton and Norton Chamber of Trade and Fitzwilliam Malton Estate.

An informal service to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire will be held on Sunday, at 10am, at St Peter’s Church, Langton Road, Norton, followed by refreshments.
