DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg has expressed his support for The Press’ campaign to Get York Moving.

Coun James Alexander, leader of the Labour party at City of York Council, wrote to the Sheffield MP to push York’s case for the three Park&Ride sites.

Mr Clegg replied: “I note this has generated a lively debate on The Press website with a mix of views on appropriate traffic reduction methods and I applaud the campaign for raising awareness of the many factors involved.

“I am pleased to see there is wide support for the campaign as local politicians and businesses are best placed to lobby the government to secure funding for the scheme.”

He stopped short of making a commitment to support the scheme in its bid to get funding from Government.

“I hope they can achieve their goal of a sustainable traffic management system – whether through this funding or via another route,” he said.

Coun Alexander said: “My letter has helped raise the profile of this vital Press campaign. I welcome the response of the Deputy Prime Minister. York’s transport funding is of such importance that party politics needs to be put aside. York and its economy needs the Deputy Prime Minister’s hope to be transferred to support with cash that was already approved by the previous government.”
