A BID for cash to improve a roundabout on a congested main road in York is still alive, after the region's transport board deferred until the summer a decision on whether to endorse the scheme for funding.
In February, the Highways Agency submitted a bid to Yorkshire and Humber Assembly's regional transport board for about £7 million to upgrade the A64 and A1237/A1036 Hopgrove and Malton Road roundabouts.
The scheme would see the agency improve the roundabouts by remodelling them, introducing traffic signal control and associated widening, lining and signing works.
At a meeting yesterday, the board decided to defer consideration of the bid - grouped as a third priority scheme - until a meeting it will have in July, after the Leeds City Region Transport Panel recommended that the board endorse the proposals for funding.
City of York Council leader Coun Galloway, who spoke in favour of the scheme at the meeting, said: "I'm delighted to have made this progress. I hope the Hopgrove roundabout scheme will get the go-ahead in July. It was recommended for refusal, so the fact that it will be considered again should be seen as positive."
