WE, the York Green Party, formally disassociate ourselves from some of the wording of the chanting - namely “racist scum” - at the recent peace rally on August 25 in Parliament Street.
We have written to the organisers with our disapproval.
This corroborates the attempts by one of our members present on the day to object to the person leading the chant’s actions and words.
Many of the people protesting believe that it is never reasonable to call people scum.
Some believe in the inherent humanity of everyone and that these words can harden attitudes rather than foster discussion.
Our placards said “Justice for all”, and “Greens against Racism”.
We were protesting against the presence of Ukip and the Democratic Football Lads Alliance in York that day.
We want to work with people of all backgrounds, including the military, to continue to oppose racism and promote real peace.

Chairperson,
