THERE have been two stories printed in The Press recently that I find difficult to believe.

The first refers to the proposal that Marble Arch should be made single lane, with motorised traffic controlled by traffic lights.

The small tunnel at the side, currently available to cyclists and pedestrians, is to be made pedestrians only, cyclists are to be catered for within the main tunnel.

Apart from the congestion this will cause and the inconvenience, this apparently unnecessary work will presumably cost money from beleaguered tax payers. It seems to me that the motto “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” is being ignored.

The second is the apparently serious proposal that the National Railway Museum may be allowed to build across Leeman Road, and “permit” through passage at hours which they decree. Is it even legal to allow a business or organisation to block the highway?

If I asked for planning permission to build an extension across the road where I live, do you think it would be agreed? Perhaps if I pointed out that this would impede motorised traffic, I might be in with a chance.
