I live in the Groves. To my left they are pulling down a former care home and building apartments. Apparently a two bedroom unit is going to cost £400,000.

To my right is the Union Street hostel which is full every night. Sometimes people who are not lucky enough to have a room sleep rough. In all weathers.

So I hope City of York Council will make sure the hostel survives. No expensive consultants need be called in. It’s a no-brainer.

All that is needed are the funds to retain this desperately needed and well-run facility.

Correction needed over housing body

Matthew Laverack (“Right to feel angry at hostel decision”, Letters, September 1) is wrong. The Union Terrace hostel is owned by York Housing Association, not by Yorkshire Housing, a different body.

Jim Taylor,

Former chair, Yorkshire Housing, York

EDITOR’S NOTE: Mr Laverack actually wrote that the hostel was owned by the Yorkshire Housing Association. The correct name for the owner is, as Mr Taylor says, the York Housing Association.

Adults should not cycle on pavements

Reading through the papers again, I came across the article ‘Cyclists urged to share with care on route’ (The Press, August 27).

I walk along the river walk into town and if the dividing lines are going to be removed all the way along the path may I just say that all cyclists should have bells on their bikes to warn pedestrians that they are approaching from behind, especially if there are young children running around enjoying themselves with no idea of the danger.

What annoys me is the adult cyclists who ride on footpaths where there is no cycle path and think they have a right to do so. Perhaps on these pedestrian paths there should be written in big letters No Adult Cyclist Allowed.
