Chris Grayling has the misfortune to front a Department of Transport that believes if they call something ‘digital’ it automatically improves.

If only. Digital improvements can bring only minor improvements to capacity and travel times.

Really big improvements in rail services come from new trains, electrification and new tracks.

Sadly his department has shown little real interest in the last two hence the public relations gloss of the ‘digital railway’.

Forgive me if I am just a little cynical, but haven’t we heard similar announcements about technical improvements before?

I am all for recycling but not when it comes to politicians’ announcements.
