TWO clubs in York which provide sports opportunities for hundreds of young people are in the running for a £200,000 cash prize.

Door 84 Youth Club and Fulford Football Club have made the top list of 30 finalists in a competition run by Persimmon Homes.

If successful - and they've been selected from more than 5,000 nominations to get this far - the winning club would use the investment to create their very own sporting legacy.

The only snag is that their success hinges on you - the York public.

The competition which could make such a difference for so many young people will be won by a public vote.

So, as the other 28 finalists around the country are urging their own supporters to take the time to vote, we are urging Press readers to get behind York's two contenders to give them a fighting chance.

As Fulford FC's secretary Graham Souter says, these opportunities are few and far between. It takes just a moment to vote, yet could make a huge difference with benefits for many people who live in this city.

Should they win, Fulford FC would use the funds to create a suitable new home venue for the club, which would also provide a much-needed community sports facility within Fulford.

Door 84 which is based in the Groves and this year celebrates its seventh birthday, would use the cash injection to update and improve their facilities.

They provide activities for almost 1,000 young people, aged eight to 25, over three nights a week, charging just £1 per session. They offer a wide variety of activities, from abseiling and climbing to healthy cooking programmes.

The club's Ashley Jones' says some of these opportunities might not otherwise be accessible to the young people.

Voting is easy; just a tap on your screen. So please spare a moment. Both causes are very deserving, working to give healthy sporting opportunities for young people.

People have until March 16 to vote at www.persimmonhomes.com/healthy-communities/finalists
