Volunteers are spreading Christmas cheer around York this week by visiting elderly people’s homes throughout the city. York Cares volunteers from a number of local businesses, schools and colleges are spending their lunch hours serving mince pies to residents at 13 different homes. Over the last year, York Cares volunteers have taken part in a number of team challenges within elderly people’s homes. These range from creating a rockery at Cherry Tree House and gardening, painting and refurbishing at Fordlands Elderley People’s Home.

York Cares is an independent charity, which promotes volunteering to people at work, and assists businesses to engage in local community action. Christmas parties are being held at Fordlands, Gale Farm Court, Glen Lodge, Grove House, Haisthorpe House, Haxby Hall, Morrell House, Oakhaven, Oliver House, Red Lodge, Willow House, Windsor House, and Woolnough House.
