A DOCTOR and an accountant have joined forces to strut their stuff for York Idol.

Dr Saheli Chaudhury, from York Medical Group, and Sasha Sutherland, of Garbutt & Elliott, are entering York Idol for the first time this year.

The competition sees local professionals, businessmen and women take their rivalry to the stage in a charity sing-off.

Mr Sutherland said: “We want to show that doctors and accountants do have lives outside of work and aren’t the most boring people.”

Mr Sutherland has sung at York Minster before and Dr Chaudhury at Leeds Town Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Despite this, they are approaching the competition as a bit of fun for charity.

“We’re certainly not going to win,” said Mr Sutherland, “We’ve heard some really talented singers in rehearsals. I think it’s going to be a really tough competition.

“Our performance is tongue in cheek too – a real 80s classic!”

The pair will be performing Starship’s’ Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now tonight, from 7.30pm, at The Duchess, in Stonebow, York.

Each contestant will perform in front of three judges and an audience of more than 200 people.

Members of the audience will pay to vote for their favourite act, with the monies raised being donated to Mencap. The contestant with the most votes will be crowned York Idol 2009.

Mr Sutherland and Dr Chaudhury are hoping to raise £500 for Mencap and have set up a fundraising webpage at http://www.justgiving.com/SashaandSaheli
