WE have always found it worthwhile to climb the stairs. This is a venue we have recommended to family and friends. They too have enjoyed the results of the climb.

However, ownership has recently changed so we decided to check out one of our favourite snack spots.

For simple snacks, tea (£1.40), coffee (£1.40/£2.30), toasted teacakes (£1.40) and shortbread (50p) are all modestly priced. As far as we could tell, the menu is largely as before. Sandwiches and baguettes range from £3.50 to £5.55.

There were also a variety of special baguettes such as cheese and chutney, brie and grapes, ham with tomato and cheese with onion.

We noted that for each platter of meat or cheese salad with chutney and mixed olives 50p of the £6.75 cost is donated to the Brunswick charity.

Ann could never resist the cottage cheese and fruit salad. Would it be as good as before?

Presented on a plate (it used to come in a bowl) there was ample cheese with tomato, cucumber, leaves, three peppers, grapes and some crisps.

Two separate dishes provided coleslaw and sultanas, walnuts, almonds and Brazils. The verdict - just as good as ever!

The soup I ordered was only mildly hot. However it was readily changed and at the second attempt proved to be delicious.

So was the bread with olives and sun dried tomato that is supplied by a bakery in Shambles.

Ann was content with a pot of tea and couldn't be tempted by sticky toffee pudding (£3.25) or a homemade cake (£2.50).

A cinnamon bagel (£1,80) was too tempting for me and it turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Overall this venue remains excellent, but sadly there is no wheel chair access. Surely it is time that the Press reports from 1997 displayed at the front door were updated.
