The Highwayman

ANY time we have passed this venue, the number of vehicles in the car park and lay-by suggests it is a popular stop.

It opens at 7am and closes at 4.30pm (earlier at weekends).

Not only can you sit inside, there are picnic tables with an excellent view of the Scarborough-bound traffic. In addition, we observed a brisk take-away trade.

When we arrived, all the vacant tables had been cleared and wiped, something we always applaud.

The menu is printed above the servery in letters which we thought would be legible to almost everyone.

Tea cost 95p, coffee £1, sandwiches £2.20 in a roll or plus 75p with salad. There is also a children’s menu.

Pies came with two vegetables and a choice of chips or potatoes for £5.75. There was also a range of fried items with chips.

Ann was attracted to the Famous Highwayman’s all-day breakfast. For £6.95, you get two bacon rashers, two sausages, egg, beans, tinned tomato, black pudding, mushrooms, a slice of bread and butter, tea or coffee. Remove a sausage and a bacon rasher and it becomes a light breakfast for £5.95, Ann’s choice.

This proved to be a satisfying, if somewhat calorie-high plate of food. I decided to hold back and restricted myself to sausages, egg, beans and chips with a cup of tea (£5.75).

We noted that the food was freshly cooked and exceptionally hot, despite being served on cold plates.

Tea was served by the cup with milk already in. The Tetley teabags had draw strings which enabled them to be squeezed without getting our fingers wet.

Customers came and went, having consumed drinks, chips, sandwiches and all-day breakfasts.

Any snags? There is a step into the café.

Toilets are across the car park and from the work in progress it would appear that they will be surrounded by a high fence and security gate shortly.
