ACTING on a recommendation that a café had recently opened in Easingwold, Ann and I called at this venue. We were grateful for the discretion exercised by a customer who recognised us.

We discovered that what had previously been a video shop and house was now a modern café extending to a conservatory and patio. Despite the sunshine, we decided to sit inside.

The menu offered light snacks from 10am to 11.30am. Although we arrived later, the staff were happy to serve us. In fact, a party of four arrived just before midday only wanting coffee and they were also served cheerfully.

Ann chose a latte (£1.95) which arrived promptly in a glass beaker. It retained its heat well. I enjoyed two cups of tea (£1.50) from a pot which for once was a decent pourer. Fresh milk was provided in a small jug which ensured little wastage.

The choice of food was limited including biscuits, toasted teacake (£1.75), fruit scones (£1.85) or with jam and cream (£2.35).

Ann requested a cheese scone which came nicely warmed and with a generous helping of butter. I selected a bacon sandwich in brown bread (£2.95). There was a delay while the bacon was cooked, but it was well worth it. The bacon was crisp and had an excellent flavour.

We were delighted with our snack and especially with the complimentary shortbread biscuits.

Looking at the lunch menu, we felt that we could probably manage a main course within our budget, but that would be for another day.

As we departed a dinner menu was on display. This would definitely be in the treat category.
