Yet another new snack spot in the city having only been open for a couple of months. Essentially it is a bar selling speciality ale with a limited range of food items.

There was no one in the venue when I arrived, but not for long.

Two overseas visitors followed me in. Then four from Edinburgh, plus some others. Considering the venue is tucked out of the way, I was surprised just how many people had spotted it.

I inspected a cabinet of readymade and labelled paninis.

Chirozo, manchego with red peppers (£3.15) and rosemary ham, pesto with tomato were examples (£2.74). This seemed an odd price when everything else was priced in five or ten pence denominations.

I wondered about a spicy chicken wrap (£3.10), but finally decided to have a brie de meaux and cranberry panini (£2.85). This was toasted to order and arrived at my table by the window dangerously hot. I was about to ask for a serviette when the sole assistant disappeared upstairs. He reappeared with a fresh packet of large serviettes with an apology that I had to wait.

While I enjoyed my snack, I observed an A-board outside advertising Italian coffee, Twinings tea or hot chocolate with a handmade cake for £3.50.

Casting an eye down the cake menu which included caramel shortcake (£1.75), hazelnut and redcurrant fair-trade brownie (£1.95) and butter cream and jam sponge (£2.05) I opted for the lemon drizzle slice (£1.75). With a strong lemon flavour and firm texture I had no complaints.

All this was washed down with a cup of black coffee and inevitable wrapped biscuit. Coffee on its own costs between £1.60 and £2.20 with all varieties of tea £2. But one customer was disappointed not be able to have green tea.

Despite being on his own, the assistant managed to serve all customers promptly. It was not clear how he would have coped if the upper floor had also been occupied.

The entrance was narrow but I suspect that a wheelchair could get in but not to the upper floor where the toilets are located.

When it came to paying I was told that my coffee and cake qualified for the £3.50 deal bringing the total cost to £6.35.
