AN ENTERTAINMENT retailer with branches in York has declared its intention to appoint administrators.

The announcement comes just over a week after computer games retailer Game, which has branches in Spurriergate, York, and Monk’s Cross, put itself up for sale in a last-minute attempt to avoid financial collapse.

Today the trading of shares in the company was suspended, before the board announced its discussions with stakeholders had not made sufficient progress, and it filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator.

Councillor James Alexander, Labour leader of City of York Council, said: “Game employs over 20 people at its stores in Spurriergate and Monks Cross Shopping Park and I’m obviously concerned about the impact today’s announcement may have on them. The council’s Economic Development and Future Prospect’s teams will be working closely with Game Group locally to provide support and advice as required.”

A statement from Game Group plc said: “In the short term the board's intention is that the business will continue to trade and discussions with lenders and third parties will continue under the protection of the interim moratorium."
