YORK chocolate maker Nestlé has become the first major confectioner to remove plastic packaging from all its Easter eggs, as part of a major green initiative to stop plastic waste going to landfill.

In a six-year project masterminded by experts at the York factory, plastic on Smarties, KitKat and Aero eggs has been replaced by recyclable cardboard certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The milk chocolate for the eggs is made in York before being shipped to Halifax, where the eggs are created.
