THE owners of York’s famous Bettys tea rooms are looking to boost customer comfort by replacing outdated equipment.

Bettys and Taylors Group Limited say the chiller plant at the St Helen’s Square business, which regulates temperatures and is between 20 and 30 years old, has come to the end of its lifespan and its regular breakdowns have caused “discomfort” for staff and visitors.

The company has now applied to City of York Council to fit a replacement, which it says will also be more environmentally-friendly and efficient as well as reducing the “clutter” at the back of the listed building.

“The proposals will improve the appearance at the rear of the building and provide a more controllable, efficient temperature control internally to both staff and customers,” said a statement submitted to the council by Walker Nicholas Architects.

“The objective of the design is to create a comfortable environment within the building for staff and customers.”

Planners are expected to make a decision on the scheme in December.
