IF at first you DO succeed, then it’s try, try and try again.

That seemed to be the guiding force behind a York turf company transforming the Great Room at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel into a spectacular rugby stadium, complete with real turf and rugby posts.

About 1,400 sq metres of Event Turf, the soil-less real grass grown by Lindum of West Grange, Thornganby, York, was laid.

And with the walls covered in a continuous photograph of the crowds at Twickenham taken at the Six Nations tournament this year, guests felt as though they were on a rugby pitch surrounded by spectators.

It was a spectacular setting for 700 guests who attended the Betview Awards, the “Oscars” of the betting and gambling industry.

Lindum is well known for “greening up” spectacular events in the capital.

It once used 1,000 sq metres of Event turf to transform the Dorchester ballroom into “a day at the races” and used 2,000 sq metres to transform Trafalgar Square into London’s village green.

Stephen Fell, managing director of Lindum and creator of Event Turf said: “The Great Room at Grosvenor House looked fantastic for the Betview Awards. “The entire look and feel of the venue was transformed by the grass into that of a major rugby stadium like Twickenham. The versatility, flexibility and ease of use of Event Turf mean that it can be used in all kinds of creative and sometimes unusual situations both indoor and outdoor.”

The transformation took just hours thanks to Event Turf, an innovative “living grass carpet”. The mature soil-less grass growing in felt, made from recycled British textiles, can be rolled out and fitted like a carpet, then rolled back up again afterwards leaving no mess behind after the event. Rob Anderson, of events management company Added Dimension, said: “It was the perfect choice for what we wanted to achieve.”
