property owners with a level crossing on their land are being urged to help the Easingwold-based Country Land and Business Association fight new legislation.
The association claims proposals for legislative reform would make it much easier for operating companies to close crossings and will restrict the landowners’ options for appeal.
Dorothy Fairburn, the association’s Yorkshire director, said: “Many farmers and landowners rely on private level crossings to farm their land and carry out key day-to-day business activities.
“Currently, level crossings can only be closed through negotiation with those who have the right of way across the railway or through a compulsory purchase procedure.”
The association claims the proposals favour operating companies looking to make cost savings on maintenance of neglected crossings.
