THERE are only five days to go until the gates open on this year’s Countryside Live in Harrogate – and it’s promising to be the best yet.

The two-day event, to be held in purpose-built exhibition halls at the Great Yorkshire Showground, starting on Saturday, has already attracted record entries across the competitive classes, according to organisers, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

Nigel Pulling, its chief executive, said: “While Countryside Live is a fun event for all the family, it does have an important message – that farming and rural life are a vital part of our economy and our future, and should be supported by us all. It’s a traditional country show where you can see some of the finest examples of livestock in Britain, but also do your Christmas shopping.”

New this year to the event are sheepdog displays, while Ben Potter with his birds of prey, returns by popular demand. Youngsters can get hands-on with some essential cookery skills in the Country Crafts Experience, with a special marquee devoted to food.

They can also help put together a wooden building construction, and try their hand at peg-loom weaving, strawcraft, felt-making and rag-rugging.

The first-ever British Team Farriery Championships will be held on the Sunday, with classes for two and four-man line-ups. And Graham Fletcher, former Olympic showjumper, will again be giving a series of master-classes over the two days.

Car parking is free. Gates open from 9am to 5pm on the Saturday, and from 9am to 4.30pm on the Sunday.
