A “mock trial” will be staged by Langleys Solicitors of York aimed at advising local businesses on commercial disputes.

Hazlewood Castle, near Tadcaster, will become the “court” on Tuesday, May 19, when business people can see for themselves the process of taking or defending a claim.

Topics covered will be how to bring a claim against a debtor, how to defend a claim, the importance of terms and conditions, issues surrounding the supply of defective goods, calculation of losses, directors’ duties, lack of managerial authority, and liquidity problems.

Jonathan Mortimer, head of Langleys’ dispute resolution, said: “Litigation is sometimes inevitable and the mock trial we’re holding will demonstrate how a resolute and proactive approach can be successful should a dispute end up in court.

“It will be an excellent opportunity for anyone in business to see first-hand how the process works, experience the courtroom atmosphere and get legal tips for every step – including how to avoid ending up in court at all.”
