CITY of York Council is getting down to business with small and medium-size ventures in the area to help them survive the credit crunch.

The authority is hosting a “doing business with York” event next month to explain how local businesses can provide the council with services.

David Walker head of financial procedures, said: “An organisation the size of the council needs to source a large number of services from other businesses.

“We are aware that some smaller companies may not understand the process of becoming a council supplier, or may be daunted by the process, and we hope that this event will help dispel some of the myths and make it easier for businesses to submit tenders.”

The event will be held at the Guildhall on Wednesday, February 11, from 10am until 4pm, and is open to any small or medium-size businesses based in the local area. A second event will be held there on March 10.

The council’s teams will be on hand throughout the day to explain how businesses can bid for contracts with the council and how they can develop the skills and competencies to market their goods and services more effectively to the authority.

Information will also be available on business rates, grants and partnerships, creditor payments and using the council’s electronic tendering system.

They will also be able to find out more about what support is available from the council.
